Answer engine optimization, AEO, is the discipline of becoming the answer instead of one of the links. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI who the best in a category is, what something costs, or who to trust, the engine does not return ten blue links. It returns an answer with a few names inside it. AEO is the work of being one of those names, and it is quietly replacing SEO as the highest-stakes position in marketing.
Why the answer beats the ranking
A ranking is an audition; an answer is a verdict. The person reading ten links still chooses; the person reading an answer mostly accepts it. That shift concentrates the winner-take-most economics of search into even fewer winners, two or three names per question per market, and it makes the old comfort of “we are on page one” dangerously obsolete, because page one and the answer are built from different materials.
What answer engines actually reward
Engines recommend what they can verify and describe. They form their own picture of a business from everything they can find, and polish without substance reads as absence. This is why beautiful premium brands lose AI recommendations to plainer competitors, a pattern I have documented across med spas, dentists, restaurants and real estate, and why the fix is never one tactic. It is a system, and the order of construction matters more than any single piece.
The strategic window
AEO in 2026 is where SEO was in 2005: the mechanism is known, the competition has not arrived, and the engines are still forming their durable opinions. Models revise trusted answers slowly, so the names they learn now will be the names they repeat for years. For a national brand that means an arms race is coming. For a local premium business it means something better: in most markets, the seat is simply open. The premium-brand version of this argument is here; the test for your own business takes 30 seconds and the results usually make the priority obvious.
If you want to know where your business stands in the answers, and what claiming the seat would take, a 15-minute conversation is where it starts.
